Acupuncture For Detox

More and more, acupuncture is becoming part of addiction treatment plans. But how effective is the ancient art—which involves precise placement of needles in pressure points—when it comes to helping with detoxification, the first step of the recovery process?

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an alternative medical treatment. It originated thousands of years ago and is part of traditional Chinese medicine. Acupuncture has also been practiced in other Asian countries as well. Practitioners use small, sterile needles to unblock vital life energy called chi. Acupuncture is recognized by the National Institutes of Health for pain management of certain conditions such as chronic neck, low-back, and knee pain as well as migraine headache prevention. How effective acupuncture may be for other conditions—from substance abuse, to smoking cessation to certain mental health issues—is still being studied by the medical community, although practitioners may tout its benefits for these conditions as well.

Acupuncture During Detoxification

In a recent study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine,Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, data was collected from a small sample of 50 participants who had received acupuncture services according to the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association Protocol to evaluate the protocol’s efficacy. Each of the participants had had at least one session of auricular acupuncture as outlined by NADANADA protocol. The NADA is a Wyoming-based non-profit group that encourages the use of acupuncture for a variety of issues, including behavioral health issues including addiction, mental health, and trauma.

Overall, participants surveyed said their acupuncture treatment was beneficial. Eight percent of participants reported no benefit. Of the balance of those studied who found acupuncture helpful, here are the benefits they reported:

  • Improved relaxation
  • Better focus and concentration
  • Improvement of psychiatric symptoms

So if acupuncture is suggested as part of your substance abuse treatment plan, it just might be worth a try. (If you’re not afraid of a little needling that is.)
